Termite Pest Control – How to Get Rid of Termites

Termite pest control can be tricky. Not only do you need to choose a company that offers the best solution for your situation, but you also need to be able to distinguish the difference between termites and other insects. You may even need to call in a termite professional like Atomic Pest Control to help you.

Types of Termites and Bait

The first thing you should do is figure out what kind of termite you have. Often times, these insects will be easy to spot. They will be characterized by their thick abdomens and wings. Termites can live outdoors, but they prefer to hide inside of a home. If they are found outside of a home, the cause is usually a tree stump or pile of dead wood.

To get rid of termites, you can use a number of methods. There are baits, liquid applications, heat treatments and direct chemicals. Although all of these methods are aimed at killing the bugs, only one method actually kills them.

Baits are a great way to attract and trap termites. These are made of materials that termites like to eat. A good bait will include slow-acting, chemically-lethal foods. In addition to the bait, you can add liquid applications, such as boric acid. Boric acid is a highly effective termite insecticide.

Termite baits contain a control agent that is delivered to the nest. This agent is then carried back to the colony by the worker termites. Using the bait is a good way to avoid a full-blown fumigation.

Another method to combat termites is by applying a product called “diatomaceous earth.” It is made of fossilized aquatic organisms. It penetrates the termite exoskeleton, and it is an excellent way to kill these critters. However, you should consult a regulatory official in your area before using any of these products.

Lastly, you can use physical barriers to prevent termites from entering your home. These include installing stainless steel mesh around the pipe frontage or building an impasse, which is a plastic sheeting locked with an insecticide.

Depending on the type of termites you have, you can opt for an over-the-counter liquid pesticide or a full-blown fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, a foam application or a baiting system are the most effective.

If you want to try something different, you can look at essential oils or neem oil. Using these can be a low-cost and effective alternative to termite fumigation. Essential oils can be mixed with dish soap, and sprayed on infested wood. Alternatively, you can buy beneficial nematodes online or from your local hardware store. Once ingested, they release symbiotic gut bacteria that poison the termites blood.

For the best termite treatment, you need to find a professional termite pest control company that will inspect your property and give you a plan of attack. Usually, you will receive follow-up consultations to make sure the treatment was successful and that no new colonies have formed.

Some companies will offer a warranty on certain structures, but not all. Ask for an estimate from multiple companies before choosing the right one for your needs. Choosing a pest control company that has an established reputation will also help you compare services.
