Fumigation and Other Methods for Termite Treatment

If you suspect that your home is infested with drywood termites, then fumigation may be necessary. Fumigation is a process that uses a fumigant to eliminate pests and leaves no residue. It is the most common method used to eliminate termites, but it is the most inconvenient. In some cases, however, other methods are needed.

Termite fumigation

Termite fumigation is a complex process in which a fumigant gas is pumped into a home to kill termites. The process requires the home to be evacuated of people, pets, and plants. The property is sealed off to protect the home from the fumes. The fumigator will then pump the gas into the home, clouding termite tunnels and killing the termites inside. The termite fumigation process can last anywhere from six hours to a week, depending on the size of the house and the type of infestation.

The process of termite fumigation is safe when performed by professionals. Proper preparation, proper application of potent chemicals, and a careful timeline are crucial. If possible, remove all plants and food from the fumigation area. The chemicals used in termite fumigation can create concerns for the environment, but a trained professional will be able to minimize these issues. Afterwards, the home should be left vacant for several days, so that the chemicals will dissipate.

Liquid-soil treatments

Liquid-soil treatments for termites are applied to the soil around your home, creating a barrier to kill termites that are traveling between your home and their nest. These treatments provide protection for up to 5 years. They are usually applied during initial construction, so they are not suitable for existing infestations.

These treatments must be done with great care, as they can harm the water sources in your home. You should make sure to protect foundation drains, wells, and cisterns. In some areas, this can be difficult but there are methods available.

Heat treatments

Heat treatments for termite treatment are a method of destroying termites and other pests. Unlike chemical solutions, heat treatments kill termites at a temperature that will not destroy the property or electronics within the home. The temperature needed to kill termites depends on the species. A drywood termite that lives in soil will die at 120 degrees, while a soil-burrowing termite will die at 130 degrees. In most cases, a heat treatment can completely eliminate a termite infestation.

One of the most popular methods for termite treatment, heat treatment uses fans or heaters to circulate hot air throughout the entire structure. This heat kills the termites and other pests, but it can be dangerous if done incorrectly. Heat treatment should only be performed by a licensed exterminator. Additionally, the temperature needs to be carefully controlled, and the home must be prepared for the heat treatment.

Physical barriers

Physical barriers to termite treatment are a good way to keep termites out of a home without using chemicals. However, these methods can pose risks for humans and pets. For example, some chemicals can persist in the environment for years and pollute groundwater. Fortunately, newer products on the market are both biodegradable and water-based. They are effective against termites and have been proven in tests in Sydney homes.

Physical barriers for termite treatment are made of materials that are hard to chew through. They can be installed during construction or retrofitted on an existing home. They can be placed under the foundation, in cavity walls, or under concrete slabs. There are even do-it-yourself versions available at some hardware stores. These systems are based on a chemical known as Termidor, which is passed from termite to termite and kills the entire colony. Fortunately, these barriers have become a mandatory part of building codes and are much less costly than chemicals.

Nylofume bags

When using Nylofume bags for termite treatment, make sure to double them before placing them in the fumigation. This will protect the food from the gas that termiticides produce. It is not a requirement, but it is a good idea if you want to ensure that the food will not be affected.

Use Nylofume bags when packing food, perishable eatables, or medicines. Food in their original packaging, such as cardboard boxes of rice, cereal, or potatoes, is not protected by the fumigant. Glass or plastic bottles are also not adequate protection.
